Leicester City have scored 34 goals in 16 games this season, more than any other team in the league. 26 of those goals have been scored by their talented duo, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy.
Those 26 goals account for more than 76% of Leicester City's total goals scored but their contributions extend beyond goals. they also have 9 assists between them and we’re not even at the halfway point in the season yet.
Together they have fired in a total of 104 shots with 51 of those on target, 23 blocked and 5 hitting the post. There has been no lack of effort on goal as evident from the numbers and Leicester have reaped the rewards, sitting pretty at the top of the league.
It’s not just their attacking contribution that stands out. They have made 25 successful interceptions between them this season. Their defensive effort has ensured Leicester win the ball high up the pitch and hurt teams before they can regain their defensive shape.
Both are also very quick on and off the ball, Vardy clocking in at more than 35 km/hr with Mahrez just marginally slower at 32 km/hr. Their speed in attack and winning the ball back has helped execute Claudio Ranieri’s pressing style of play to perfection.
They have both covered an average of 11km per game this season. The high press Ranieri has mandated has been pivotal in their performances this season but arguably their speed in counter-attack has provided the best outlet for the deadly duo, especially in away games. Leicester City are certainly the team to watch this season.
